We've all heard the great Christmas tale of Santa Claus. A Fat guy in a red coat, flying around the world in a sleigh pulled by magical reindeer, delivering toys to all the good boys and girls of the world. It's really quite a tale...but could it all come from the imagination of some drugged up hippie? Researchers think it's more than likely.

"Santa is a modern counterpart of a shaman, who consumed mind-altering plants and fungi to commune with the spirit world," John Rush, an anthropologist and instructor at Sierra College in Rocklin, California, told The Mother Nature Network.

Yup, you read that right, it would seem that Santa is part of some big, Indian winter drug fest. According to Rush, Shamans in the Siberian and Arctic regions used to give dried Amanita muscaria mushroom as gifts on the winter solstice.

In fact, late author and mushroom fanatic, James Arthur wrote this -

"Why do people bring pine trees into their houses at the Winter Solstice, placing brightly colored (red and white) packages under their boughs, as gifts to show their love for each other … ?" he wrote. "It is because, underneath the pine bough is the exact location where one would find this 'Most Sacred' substance, the Amanita muscaria, in the wild."

Crazy, right? I guess the real message of Christmas is that without drugs we wouldn't have a Santa or great music. For more on the trippy Christmas 'facts', click here. Me, I'm going find my tea pot and enjoy the season.
