If you've watched the news, picked up a magazine, or been on the internet in the past week, I'm sure you've heard about the Higgs Boson particle. If not, here's how Wikipedia explains it:

In the Standard Model of particle physics, the Higgs boson or Higgs particle is a hypothetical elementary particle, a boson, that is the quantum of the Higgs field. The field and the particle provide a testable hypothesis for the origin of mass in elementary particles. In popular culture, the Higgs boson is also called the God particle, a name disliked by many scientists,[4] after the title of Nobel physicist Leon Lederman’s The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question? (1993), which contained the author’s assertion that the discovery of the particle is crucial to a final understanding of the structure of matter.

It's been in the news lately because those world reknowned scientists at CERN have announced that they are on the brink of actually observing the Higgs Boson.  In the Large Hadron Collider that you may have seen in the sequel to The DaVinci Code, Angels & Demons.  This (the observation of the Higgs Bosen, not the mentioning of the HC in a movie, duh...), they assure us, is an unprecedented scientific breakthrough -  the find that will finally bring together science and religion.  Or not.  All that gibberish meant nothing to the few surviving brain cells I have, so I went looking for an explanation my feeble mind could grasp.  And I found it!  Of course, it would come in the form of a cartoon:
