Ben Riggs, Communications Manager for Mayor Adrian Perkins, talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about the progress of the proposed $18 monthly garbage fee. The fee, along with debate, amendments and public comments, were the main points of discussion at Monday's Shreveport City Council work session.

Riggs tells KEEL listeners that the $5 fee proposed by Councilman James Flurry "is not palatable" to the mayor, as was the suggestion by Councilman James Green that the city adopt a quarter penny sales tax. Riggs also added that the idea that any monthly fee be designated for an "enterprise fund" would be "burdensome for Shreveport resident." Riggs said that a garbage fee is necessary to shore up the city's flagging finances and that if the council kills the legislation, the mayor would have to make cuts to the Shreveport's budget.
