Okay, I'm exaggerating. No hippies were harmed before, during, or after Metallica's performance Saturday, but the patchouli crowd were mad as hell, and they wanted everyone to know it.

When it was announced that Metallica would be one of the headliners at the prestigious Glastonbury Festival in Somerset , England, the dirty hippies came out of the woodwork to complain. Originally created as the Pilton Pop, Blues & Folk Festival, inspired by the ethos of the hippy, counterculture, and free festival movements, it was understandable (not really, but don't say I can't compromise) that the normal artists and crowd would be a little aghast at, God forbid, a METAL act even being added to the bill, much less headline THEIR little get together.

But, et tu, Rob Halford? I nearly soiled myself when Rob was quoted as saying,

"I had a diva moment when I heard about METALLICA at Glastonbury. Next time, Michael [Eavis, Glastonbury organizer], when you want to bring metal to Glastonbury, can you make sure it's British?"

Diva indeed. Just be happy the seal has been broken. There's always next year for you, Queenie.

So Metallica made history Saturday night, adding a metal touch to the hippy/indie vibe, and from the reaction of the crowd, as soon as the band hit the stage with "Creeping Death", the hippies discovered that headbanging can contribute to a good buzz...check out Metallica's entire set here:
