Perhaps it's fitting that yesterday marked the 12th anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana.  What was the costliest hurricane in U.S. history will almost surely be passed when the damage can be assessed from the path of destruction that Hurricane Harvey is leaving across Texas and Louisiana.

Those who were in our state in 2005 know all too well the heartbreak and sorrow that such a disaster brings.  We also know that tragedy brings out the best in Americans who came from across the country to render aid through supplies, manpower, and money in our time of need.

Though Harvey is not finished with us yet, no doubt many of you would like to help in any way that you can.  Those responsible for the relief efforts now being conducted in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana are asking that we donate money instead of goods and services.

Here are three reputable organizations through which you can donate:

  • The American Red Cross--Text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation. You can also visit RedCross.org or call 1- 800-RED CROSS.
  • The United Way--Text UWFLOOD to 41444 to donate to the United Way Flood Relief Fund.
  • The Salvation Army—donate at HelpSalvationArmy.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

Remember, disasters are prime hunting grounds for unscrupulous predators.  If you are thinking about donating to a charity other than the ones listed above, make sure you know where your money is going. The Center for International Disaster Information advises that you check a charity monitoring organization like GiveWellCharity NavigatorCharity Watch, or the Better Business Bureau before donating.
