One of the most recognizable voices of our lifetime has passed as influential singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen died Thursday (Nov. 10) at the age of 82.

"It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away," read a statement from Sony Music Canada at the singer's Facebook page. "We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief." An official cause of death was not given, but the singer had been in poor health and the idea of death loomed in the lyrical nature of his most recent release, You Want It Darker, which was released earlier this year.

Cohen began his career publishing a few poetry collections and novels in the mid-'60s. A visit to New York turned him onto the city's growing folk music scene, and by 1967 he released his first album, Songs of Leonard Cohen. Having started as a writer, he adapted quickly to writing in the music format and became revered as a songwriter. Meanwhile, his deep voice resonated with listeners often delivering a darker tone.

The catalog is impressive, with 14 studio albums, numerous live albums and assorted compilations with tracks like "Hallelujah," "Everybody Knows," "Suzanne," "So Long, Marianne," "Bird on the Wire," "First We Take Manhattan" and more leaving their mark on music lovers.

Among his accolades were entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. According to a message from his son Adam, Cohen passed peacefully at his home in Los Angeles and was writing up until his final moments.

Coincidentally, Theory of a Deadman recently recorded a touching cover of Cohen's "Hallelujah," which they just released today. Frontman Tyler Connolly stated, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of the incomparable singer-songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen. This is a song that has always been close to our hearts. Leonard was such an amazing talent and we’ll be thinking of him every time we play this song, hope you do too." The cover is available to stream via Spotify and to purchase at this location.
