What do you do when you're the Commander-in-Chief of the largest, most sophisticated military force in the world? You ask members of it to hold the umbrella for you during a press conference, of course!

A few photos of President Barack Obama's Thursday meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan are raising eyebrows, but not for anything related to the actual discussion had. In the pictures, President Obama and Erdogan are flanked by US Marines holding umbrellas.

Since Shreveport-Bossier is a proud military city, we're wondering if any soldiers out there can chime in on whether this sort of thing is common or not for presidents. We looked through the US Marine Corps Uniform Regulation guide, but only noticed one item related to umbrellas:

"3035. UMBRELLAS (Female Marines). Female Marines may carry an all-black, plain standard or collapsible umbrella at their option during inclement weather with the service and dress uniforms. It will be carried in the left hand so that the hand salute can be properly rendered. Umbrellas may not be used/carried in formation nor will they be carried with the utility uniform.
