I listened to Weiland's new album Most Wonderful Time of the Year.(Sigh)

Now I am sure you are thinking, "why would you listen to a Christmas album?" Well, I thought that I could justify it thinking this is Scott Wieland...the voice of STP. thinking that maybe...just maybe...this would be a cool spin on some Christmas classics. You know, throughout history, some artists have done some cool songs, like the Whirling Dervishes version of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch".

In this case, ya, not so much.

I am all about artists doing something different, but Scott Weiland is:

a.) still chasing the dragon

b.) making fun of Christmas classics (which I am not opposed to doing)

c.) thinks he is Bing Crobsy

I saw him when he was supporting his Happy Galoshes album while he was going through his "I think that I am David Bowie and I need rehab" phase, during a "break" with STP. I am still scratching my head, as I am not sure which phase one is for him. He is "supposedly" clean and sober. Hell, he even claims that in the "90s where I was definitely young, dumb, and full of even more dumb." So if  you get a chance to preview this album, be warned, this is a traditional Christmas album, not a Rock Christmas album.

With a voice like Weiland's who can go from "Sex Type Thing" to "Big Bang Baby" to GNR covers, what bothers me is Weiland sings in almost a monotone, like Dean Martin would when he was drunk.  So I am not sure if he is trying to be a Rat Packer with about 15 martinis in him, or Keith Richard with a heroin drip.

Believe it or not, the only song that doesn't make him sound like a wastoid is "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". It almost sounds like Richard Carpenter helped him with this one. Karen Carpenter would even crack a smile, in the same way she would after she yacked after a trip to the all-you-can-eat buffet.

All I will say is this, a new STP in 2012 is welcomed. As long as Weiland is surrounded by the DeLeo brothers, we can all breath a sigh of relief.
