Tense moments for a BAFB B-52 crew when a Russian jet intercepts the bomber over international water.

Fox News reports the B-52 bomber flying a "routine mission" in international airspace over the Baltic Sea was intercepted by a Russian jet on Tuesday, a Pentagon spokesman said.

The bomber was deployed to the U.K. from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana earlier this month, U.S. European Command told Fox News.

The Russian Defense Ministry issued this statement:

"On June 6 Russia's airspace monitoring ... identified an air target flying along Russia's state border over the international waters of the Baltic Sea. A Sukhoi-27 fighter jet of the Baltic Sea Fleet's air defense force was dispatched to intercept the target," according to the statement, quoted by TASS.

Reuters reports Russian Defense leaders were not happy in learning about the B-52's flight over the Baltic Sea:

"The appearance of the B-52, irked Moscow. A Russian Foreign Ministry official said the plane's appearance in Europe would not help ease tensions between the West and Russia. A former Russian Air Force commander called the move "disrespectful."
