An amazing and heroic act was captured by a surveillance camera at Airline High School Monday.

Just past noon, school bookkeeper Sheila Rivers was having lunch in the kitchen of the administrative area. Suddenly, she began choking, a piece of vegetable lodged in her throat, and she began waving for help.

At first, Rivers tried to clear her windpipe by drinking water from a hallway fountain, but when then didn't work, by her own admission, she began to panic.

Luckily, Bossier Sheriff’s Deputy and School Resource Officer Matt Reger noticed that  the bookkeeper was in trouble in and moved quickly to assist. Reger grabbed Rivers and repeatedly performed the Heimlich maneuver until the object blocking Rivers’ airway was dislodged.

"I couldn't breathe. I couldn't swallow, and I couldn't get it up and I was just about to black out," Rivers told KTBS, "And all of the sudden he picks me up like a sack of potatoes."

"As soon as I saw it, there was no time to think about it. You just do it," Deputy Reger told the TV station, "I just ran over there and did it, I'm glad that she's okay,"

Reger said that was the first time he's ever had to use the life-saving maneuver and urged everyone to be trained in the procedure.
