A divided Dallas City Council has voted to block the return of a sex exposition that drew about 15,000 people last summer.

By an 8-7 vote, the council rejected the booking of this summer's Exxxotica expo at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center despite assurances by the event organizers that they would sue over the exclusion. Exxxotica Organizer J. Handy promised to seek a temporary injunction to overturn the city ban, likely by this week.

Mayor Mike Rawlings, who pushed for the ban, described the initiative in terms of principle. He called it a ``civic obligation'' to protect the city and its citizens. Furthermore, he said that hosting such an event at a city-owned venue would be inappropriate.
