As my friend Todd Hopkins so eloquently put it on his Facebook page, "Unfortunately progress brings inconvenience."

And that is certainly the case for those who enjoy regular summer outings at the Earl G. Williamson Park on Caddo Lake in Oil City.

Beginning this coming Monday, June 28, the park will be temporarily closed so that major electrical upgrades and several park improvements can be made. “We are excited about the renovations and upgrades to one of our Parish’s premier parks,” said Caddo Parks and Recreation Director Patrick Wesley.

“These improvements allow the Parish to continue to provide quality recreational opportunities and the ability to enjoy our Parish’s natural assets in a clean, safe and comfortable environment,” said Wesley.

Anglers will find solace in that the boat launch and adjacent parking areas for boaters and fishing population will remain open throughout the entire construction/park improvement process; recreational fishing and boating will not be affected.

Here's what the parish has planned in the way of improvements for the park:

  • Installation of new fishing pier
  • Installation of new ballfield lights
  • Ballfield upgrades
  • Addition of a 9 hole disc golf course
  • Restroom upgrades
  • Sidewalk upgrades
  • Installation of new park signage and welcome kiosk
  • Installation of new trash receptacles

Completion is scheduled for mid to late November, with no impacts anticipated to the annual Christmas on Caddo Fireworks Festival, slated for December 4.
