With the Louisiana legislative session in full swing, a number of proposals, many designed to take more money from the citizens of the state are being considered. One idea that seems to have nine lives is legislation to increase the gas tax for Louisiana drivers. And, just like in last year's session when a seventeen cent proposal was defeated, the latest incarnation of the measure has met an early demise.

On Monday, the Louisiana House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee refused to advance another state gas tax increase. The bill, HB542, would have increased the per gallon tax by eighteen cents. The defeat comes as legislators in Washington continue to consider a federal gas tax increase of to fund a bipartisan push to fund a $2 trillion infrastructure plan.

Comments on the Ways and Means Committee vote from Americans for Prosperity - Louisiana Director John Kay:

“We commend the committee members for not advancing this proposal and recognizing a gas tax increase is a non-starter. There is no denying our roads and highways need updating but increasing the tax burden on taxpayers is an unpalatable approach. It’s been defeated many times before and will lose again because taxpayers are tired of funding bad spending habits with more tax increases. We urge legislators to take a deeper look at our budget for spending inefficiencies and further explore private-public partnerships to address our infrastructure needs.”
