The shooting that happened on October 1st in Las Vegas is the deadliest in history.  58 people lost their lives that terrible day.  And authorities still don't know what motivated an ordinary man to turn homicidal maniac.

Sadly, events like this are becoming all to common in the United States.  It's come to the point where we're not surprised when another mass shooting occurs.  We've come to expect them.

That doesn't mean we can't prepare for them.  The Bossier Sheriff's department is being proactive by offering a special training class to to teach preparedness for  terrifying situations that may occur in public places.

Called "Surviving the Terror”, the free class will be led by instructors of the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Training Academy at the Viking Drive Substation, 2510 Viking Drive in Bossier City, today from 6 to 8 p.m.

In a press release Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington said, “Our primary goal for this class is to help our residents be prepared before a tragedy occurs.  Fear is a motivating factor that can cause you to panic or to carry out actions that you planned in advance.  We want you to be ready…just in case.”

The class will focus on several topics that will prepare attendees to react quickly to keep themselves safe, even before first-responders arrive.  Topics include:

  • Situational awareness
  • Developing exit/evacuation plans
  • Establishing rally points and communicating with your loved ones and friends in an emergency situation.
  • Considerations about using a concealed handgun.

The free class is open to the public, and reservations are not necessary.  For more information contact the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Training Academy at (318) 965-3525 for more information.
