Humane Society, Social Media Helping Law Enforcement Deal With Animal Cruelty

You can say social media has been more of a curse than a blessing, and many people do, but the four legged and furry among us are benefiting from it in a way no one ever expected. More cases of animal cruelty are being reported and prosecuted because of social media according to Jeff Dorson, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Louisiana, When people see other people treating animals poorly, they report it on social media and back it up with pictures.  "We're averaging multiple arrests every month because people all over the state are more involved and we have access to better evidence quickly.", says Dorson.

And that is why the Humane Society has found it necessary to begin holding seminars to help those in law enforcement be better prepared to address these cases.  "We're helping law enforcement to teach them what to look for, what constitutes cruelty, and what the laws are, how to apply them, and what to do when you see and animal that's being mistreated.", Dorson said, adding that changes in technology and advances in forensic pathology can help them determine what happened to animals that are brought in.  "There's  a lot of new technical aspects to doing investigations, and we all have to keep on our toes because the public wants these cases resolved and to help these animals in need." Dorson said.
