Is a Crime-Ridden Weekend the New Normal in Shreveport?
Is a crime-ridden weekend involving children the new normal in Shreveport, Louisiana?
This weekend my heart sank. A deadly shooting over the weekend left a 13-year-old Shreveport teen, Kelvonte Daigre dead. A horrid violent event left three other teenagers wounded.
Are we talking about Shreveport or Gotham City?
Here is what we know so far, Saturday night at Bert Kouns and Millicent Way a deadly shooting happened. At first, it was just reported as a drive-by shooting. Although it is still unclear as to what the motive was several reports are saying two vehicles were exchanging gunfire.
I read a post from Doug Warner with KSLA that has challenged what we all heard about the shooting.
According to KTBS one person is being charged with 2nd-degree murder in this case and has been booked into the Caddo Parish Juvenile Center. Since the suspect is a minor the name is not being released.
I think we are all asking ourselves the same question, what if that was me driving down Bert Kouns at 10:30 p.m.?
I normally do late dinner on the weekends. Me being out past 10:00 p.m. on a weekend is nothing out of the ordinary. Is Shreveport safe after dark? The days of thinking "If I keep my head down and mind my own business I'll be fine" are gone. So many innocent people have come out to say their cars were struck by stray bullets. Even Willis Knighton on Bert Kouns had stray bullets hit the lobby.
What happens when you can't drive after dark in Shreveport because it feels like no street is safe?
I would hate to live in a town where we have a strict curfew. We have a short-staffed police department with new leadership. What can be done to make Shreveport feel safe again? Is this just going to be a weekly occurrence? Should we just "get used to crime" in Shreveport?
