Highest Point to the Lowest Point in Arkansas – How Low?
If you do a lot of traveling in Arkansas, chances are you have discovered the different terrains and valleys the natural state has to offer outdoor enthusiasts.
Highest Point in Arkansas
From the rugged terrain of the Ozark Mountains and the Ouachita Mountains to the highest point in Arkansas Signal Hill at Mount Magazine State Park standing 2,753 feet above sea level, located in the Ouachita Mountains in the U.S. Interior Highlands.
So it got me thinking.
Where is the Lowest Point in Arkansas?
With all the peaks and mountain ranges in Arkansas comes the lowlands and river valleys where the watershed feeds into the lowest point in Arkansas, according to A-Z Animals. The Ouachita River flows through the state for 100 miles and its journey is a small stream that starts in the town of Eagleton just Northwest of Mena, Arkansas.
The river flows southward before the river takes a turn and flows into northeast Louisiana. At that spot in Arkansas, the river sits at only 55 feet above sea level, the lowest point in the state.
It's during the journey through the mountainous regions that the river picks up speed after collecting water from the many watersheds along the way. From where it began to the lowest point, the river elevation drops some 1,400 feet before it flows into a lock and dam located in the Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge just west of Crossett.
Lake Jack Lee sits just north of the lowest point in Arkansas and has an abundance of wildlife and birdwatching where hundreds of various species and endangered species call this their habitat.
Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge is considered a sportsman's paradise with over 76,000 acres in southern Arkansas for fishing and camping.
Now you know where the lowest point in Arkansas sits or as some folks in the South just call it, LA which stands for lower Arkansas, in this neck of the woods.
