Generations United asks us to do any of a number of special things just to let grandparents know how much we love and appreciate them:

  • Read a book with your grandfriends, grandparents, or grandfamily caregiver.
  • Take a walk together through your neighborhood or favorite park.
  • Share family stories of your favorite memories together, your family’s history, or look through a family photo album together.
  • Go for an outing as a family (i.e. dinner at a restaurant, to the movies, skating rink, hiking, amusement park, etc.).
  • Cook a meal together using your favorite family recipe.

Certainly it's not too much to ask to spend just one day showing these incredible people that the influence they've had on our lives didn't go un-noticed.

Of course, here in Louisiana, we dance to a different drummer, so maybe of going to an amusement park, you have a fish fry.  Instead of hitting the skating rink, maybe it's a fishing trip on the river.

And it's what we actually call our grandparents in Louisiana that's slightly different than the nicknames they are given in other states.

In a national study by preply.com, there were a number of key takeaways.

  • “Nana” and “Papa” are the most popular nicknames for grandma and grandpa in the U.S.
  • Of 50 states, 34 had a majority say they’d rather spend time with their grandparents than their parents.
  • This may sound odd, but 49% would confide in their grandparents over their parents.
  • An incredible 44% of respondents said their maternal grandma is the #1 fan favorite.

What Did The Study Find Out About Louisiana Grandparents?

Whether you actually have one of these or not, the number one name for grandmothers is "Granny." (If she's still in her 40's, I'm betting this was NOT her choice)

And the number one nickname for grandfathers here in the Bayou State?  Believe it or not, it's Paw Paw!

So, Granny and Paw Paw, this Sunday is YOUR day!  Let's make gumbo and watch the Cowboys and Saints! Yes, that's how we do it in Louisiana!
