Could Six Flags Over Texas be Closing?
Anyone who grew up around these parts probably has great childhood memories of weekends spent at Six Flags Over Texas, even before Bugs and his pals took over. I'll never forget the night we got stuck on the ShockWave, one of the first loop rollercoasters. It turned out fine, just a minor issue with the pull chain on the initial climb, but it was exciting having to climb out of the car and back down the catwalk none the less.
But a recent article in the Courier Post talked about how some Six Flags locations across the country could possibly close.
Six Flags Recent Merger with Cedar Fair Entertainment
Six Flags recently completed an $8 billion merger with Cedar Fair Entertainment, and in a recent earnings call, officials said it could consider closing some of its 27 theme parks across the country. The company's long-range plan, called "Project Accelerate", included a "comprehensive review of the portfolio to evaluate the potential divestiture of non-core assets to help reduce leverage."
In laymen's English that means selling off properties that aren't performing. According to the Courier's story, Six Flags CEO Richard Zimmerman told investors on the call "every park in our portfolio has a role. If it plays its role right, these are irreplaceable assets."
The article doesn't say anything about any specific park being closed, including Six Flags Over Texas, but other reports say "everything is now on the table."
Is Six Flags Over Texas Closing?
The good news for now is, a Six Flags Entertainment Corporation spokesman said last Thursday that none of the parks are set to close now, but the company is reviewing all of its assets.
