Early Sunday, a Shreveport Police Officer assigned to Downtown responded to a report of a fight in the alleyway beside Sand Bar on Spring Street.

Sand Bar owner, Tim Huck said the fight started between people outside of his bar. The men were denied entry in to Sand Bar for being too intoxicated. The men began talking outside of the bar when the conversation took an ugly turn.

The men took the argument to the alley beside the business when a physical brawl broke out. Police were called-in, and a female SPD Officer was the first to arrive to the scene. Tim Huck accompanied the lone Officer to the scene of the fight.

The Officer attempted to stop the ongoing brawl. During the encounter, a struggle ensued with one of the men involved. During that struggle, the suspect pulled and quickly shot a gun, hitting the Officer in the vest.

The Officer returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.

Both the officer and the suspect were taken to a local hospital. The Officer is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect later died from injuries sustained during the exchange.

In accordance with standard protocol for Officer-involved shootings, the Louisiana State Police has been notified and will lead the investigation into the incident.

The incident was captured by the Shreveport Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center camera system.

From SPD:

"This incident is another reminder of the dangers our officers face every time they answer a call for service. What began as an attempt to stop a fight ended with an officer being shot in the line of duty."

No additional information is being released at this time.
