SHREVEPORT, LA - I recently noticed a long line of shopping carts from a big box store along the side of a road in Shreveport. These carts all belong to Walmart just a couple of blocks away. But folks use these carts to carry items to their apartments in the same general neighborhood. But they just don't return the carts. Why do some people think it's ok to take these carts and not return them to the store?

What New Technology Is On the Way?

Some stores are now using a new king of buggy. This new contraptions have technology that will lock the cart’s wheels if the carts go outside a certain zone. These buggies also will stop moving if they contain groceries they have not been scanned. It's a way to prevent shoplifting, but it's also a way to keep the carts from disappearing.

What Stores Have This New Technology?

Most of the Kroger stores in Shreveport and Bossier have this new technology on the shopping carts. Walmart and Target stores are beginning to bring this technology onboard. Many retailers spend as much as $15,000 a year to retrieve carts that come up missing.

We are surrounded by new technology. Click here to see a new food spot that has no employees.

Gatekeeper is a loss prevention company and they say these big retailers also spend thousands on maintenance, replacement and government fines for abandoned carts. Data shows at least 2 million carts are stolen each year.

Carts with this new technology will likely be employed by most of the big retailers soon. Some are worried the carts lock up before you ever get your items to your car.

But until this technology is put in place by many of the big companies, we will probably see some of our neighborhoods cluttered with these shopping carts because so many people think it's ok to leave the store property with them to transport their items home.
