Several times in the past a study has placed Shreveport, Louisiana as one of the most unhappy cities to live in, each time the study is updated the people of Shreveport can never come together to decide if we are as unhappy as the study suggests. With the latest study available now we can start to understand why Shreveport is reportedly so depressed.

Shreveport Shows Improvement

Compared to where the city ranked in 2022 for the study of the happiest cities in America, Shreveport was a little bit happier than before but not by too much. Going from 10th least happy to 15th least happy in 3 years is an improvement, if only a little.

However, if we look further back to 2019, Shreveport was even happier than compared to now, at the time being the 20th least happy city. It would be safe to assume the global shutdown of 2020 contributed to the fall in happiness when compared to 2019.

Why is Shreveport Always So Sad?

Going back to at least 2019 Shreveport has consistently been considered a sad city by WalletHub's annual study, but why hasn't always been clear to everyone. The way the study is done each city is given a score for 3 main categories, emotional/physical well-being, income/employment, and community/environment. Those 3 categories are then averaged together for an overall rank.

Shreveport was ranked the 10th worst in emotional and physical well-being, 5th worst for income and employment, and maybe unsurprisingly had a higher score in community/environment as the 42nd best in the rank.

Here are a few examples of the data used to determine each rank for each category.

  • Emotional & Physical Well-Being
    • Depression Rate
    • Suicide Rate
    • Adequate-Sleep Reported
    • Life Expectancy
  • Income & Employment
    • Income-Growth Rate
    • Poverty Rate
    • Job Satisfaction Overall
    • Job Security
    • Unemployment Rate
  • Community & Environment
    • Divorce Rate
    • Weather
    • Public Parks
