Breaking News: Reports Nick Saban Retiring From Alabama Football
A massive story has rocked the world of college football, and all of sports really, as Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban is reportedly retiring. The reports are coming from major outlets like ESPN, Bleacher Report, and others.
According to some sources, a mandatory meeting was called for Alabama players and coaches this afternoon, where Saban broke the news to the program.
The 72-year-old coach won 7 National Championships, including one at LSU, and 6 with Alabama. His career record as a head coach at the NCAA level is 292-71-1, with a career bowl record of 19-12. He also holds a 9-5 record in College Football Playoff games.
Saban started his head coaching career in 1990 with Toledo, before leaving that job to become the Defensive Coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. The man who hired Saban to run his defense in Cleveland was none other than NFL legend Bill Belichick.
After his run with the Browns, Saban took the head coaching position with Michigan State, where he took the team to the 1995 Independence Bowl in Shreveport. On that December day in Shreveport, his Spartans team lost to the LSU Tigers 45-26. That became very interesting in 2000 when Saban left the Michigan State program to take over the LSU Tigers.
When at LSU, Saban took the team to the BCS Championship Game in 2003, where they won the National Championship.
In December of 2005, Saban would move on to become the Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins, getting his first NFL Head Coaching position. That job wouldn't go as smoothly as some of Saban's other stops. After some rough years with the Dolphins, Saban took the position as the Alabama Head Coach in January of 2007.
From there, Saban turned the Crimson Tide into one of the greatest college football dynasties in history. Just at Alabama, Saban's record was 206-28 for an .880 wining percentage. His Alabama bowl record was 16-7, a .696 winning percentage.
Under his tenure at Alabama, the program had 6 National Championships, 9 SEC titles, 4 Heisman Trophy winners, and 47 Consensus All-Americans.
