Former LSU Star and Shreveport Native Shockingly Cut By NFL Team

When they say "the NFL is a business" they aren't kidding. Multiple teams have been busy over the last week making some shocking decisions to part ways with players. Some of those decisions are baffling because of the talent of the player, while others make a lot of sense because of a player's recent performance on the field...then there are some that are confusing because even though the player's performance has been bad, they're owed a historic amount of money that the team is willing to eat.

The particular roster move we're about to discuss doesn't really fall into any of the three descriptions we've laid out here. This one falls under the banner of "rebuild", which is a huge shame.

It's been described as a "cap-cutting frenzy", as the Buffalo Bills have decided to cut multiple All Pro level players, as well as some fan-favorites. One of those superstar players that will be looking for a new team is Shreveport native and LSU legend Tre'Davious White.

White is a former Green Oaks Giant and LSU Tiger, who has become one of the top defensive backs in the NFL. While at LSU, White started playing right away as a True Freshman in 2013. In his first season he played in 12 games, making 55 tackles and bringing in 2 interceptions. Over his whole LSU career, he tallied 6 interceptions, 1.5 sacks, and 34 pass break-ups. He also became a prolific return man during his time in Baton Rouge, scoring 3 return touchdowns during his career. His Senior year he was a Consensus All-American and First Team All-SEC.

After playing at LSU, White was taken in the First Round of the 2017 NFL Draft as the 27th overall pick. The team that took him were the Buffalo Bills, where he's played his whole career. A career that has seen him named to the All-Rookie Team, become a Second-Team (2020) and First-Team (2019) All-Pro, and be named to 2 Pro Bowls. Not to mention he led the league in interceptions in 2019.

He has over 300 tackles in his career, 5 forced fumbles, 18 interceptions, and a defensive touchdown...and he's not even 30-years-old.

But the Buffalo Bills aren't releasing Tre White because he's not a good player, they're releasing him because they've spent money poorly. Fellow All-Pro, Safety Jordan Poyer was also cut by Buffalo. As well as center Mitch Morse, defensive back Siran Neal, return specialist Deonte Harty, and running back kick Nyheim Hines, who were all cut.

Now, Tre White is coming off his second recent major injury, which could cause concern for some. But there's no evidence that he's going to be hurt long-term by the injuries. This move will give him a chance to prove that in a new city.

White will now be able to shop for a team that fits his personal needs. This could mean relocation closer to his native Shreveport...somewhere like New Orleans or Dallas. But New Orleans is in some salary cap trouble, like the Bills, so that might not work out. Unless White is willing to take a short-term "show me" deal, where he takes a discounted contract to prove his injuries are behind him. Or he could opt for a long-term deal at lower-than-market-value too.

While today isn't a great day for Tre White, you have to believe he's going to make the best of this, and find the perfect landing spot for himself.
