Elderly Louisiana Vet’s Hardship Ends Thanks To Kindness Of Strangers

Making ends meet each month is tough for most people, and so was the case for Air Force 90-year-old veteran Dillon McCormick of Metairie according to Goodnewsnetwork.org.

A former news anchor in New Orleans, Karen Swensen, came across McCormick pushing shopping carts in the Winn Dixie parking lot in 90-degree weather with our typical humidity so she knew she had to help.

This man who served our country had to eke out his living in the hot and humid parking lot of Winn Dixie in Metairie. Now McCormick only has to work if he chooses to after Swensen took to the internet.

Swensen spoke to other customers who told her that McCormick had been working there for years. McCormick told Swensen he needed about $2,500 to pay his bills each month, and while he does have social security, it's only half the amount he needs.

She was moved to help. Swensen decided to start a GoFundMe account for the veteran who served in Colorado and Greenland. People truly responded with their kindness via donations.

Swensen says that within a 24-hour period, people donated $200,000. The donations continued to rise, so much so, that she decided to halt the fundraiser as the gentleman was going to have all the money he needed.

She says,

No longer will the 90-year-old veteran have to push shopping carts in triple-digit heat to put food on his table. Should he choose to remain working, it will be just that-his choice.

This wonderful man will now have the choice of whether or not he continues to work.
