Louisiana Drivers Could Soon Face New Test to Renew License
LOUISIANA - A proposed law in Louisiana could bring a major change for drivers across the state, and it may mean taking a driving test again just to renew your license.
The proposal is already getting attention as lawmakers consider new ways to improve road safety statewide.
I'd like to think I'd have no problem taking a driving test I passed when I was 15-years-old, but would this new test be something different than what I remember?
Let's see what's going here...
New Louisiana Bill Would Require Knowledge Test For License Renewal
A newly introduced bill in the Louisiana Legislature, House Bill 777, would require drivers to pass a knowledge-based exam when renewing their driver’s license.

Under the bill, drivers renewing a standard Class “E” license would need to successfully complete a written-style test covering driving laws and safety rules.
Right now, most Louisiana drivers can renew their licenses without taking a written test unless their license has been expired for an extended period.
House Bill 777 would require drivers to watch a video, then complete an exam when renewing their license at the Office of Motor Vehicles.
How Driver’s License Renewals Currently Work In Louisiana
Currently, renewing your Louisiana driver’s license is relatively simple. Drivers can typically renew licenses online, by mail if eligible, or by going to the DMV in person. Licenses are valid for about six years, and drivers can renew up to 180 days before expiration.

In some cases a vision test may be required, but a full knowledge exam is not currently part of the standard renewal process.
This could change if Louisiana House Bill 777 passes.
Why Lawmakers Want This Change
Supporters of House Bill 777 say the goal is to improve driver awareness and road safety.

The video would test drivers on their knowledge of state driving laws, road signs, and driving practices. The bill aims to reinforce state traffic laws, roadway signage and markings, and safe driving practices, with a focus on distracted driving.

What do you think of Louisiana House Bill 777? Do you think if it passes it will help make Louisiana's roads safer, or is this just going to be something that complicates our already complicated lives?
