Horrific Texas Doctor Proven Guilty Sentenced to 190 Years
As if getting a major operation wasn't scary enough, now the story of Dr. Raynaldo Riviera Ortiz Jr. will make you question whether or not it's worth it to get that weird lump examined. The Dallas anesthesiologist decided that helping people wasn't his true calling, but he would rather be the subject of an upcoming Dateline episode. Ortiz was sentenced to 190 years in federal prison after tampering with IV bags at Baylor Scott & White Surgicare North Dallas for the crimes that he committed against his trusting patients.
In 2022, Ortiz put a drug cocktail containing epinephrine, lidocaine, and other deadly substances into the IV bags of unsuspecting patients. Doctors on scene during the surgeries were often confuse as to why their patients were starting to have medical emergencies during routine surgeries. Ortiz even made one of his colleagues, Dr. Melanie Kaspar, a victim of his sick and demented crimes.
Who knows how long Ortiz would have continued to dose patients if he hadn't been caught on surveillance camera tampering with the IV bags. Why would he do something so heinous? Apparently, he was going to be brought up on disciplinary actions due to grievances against him. I can't imagine this caused him to get less grievances.
Prosecutors said that Ortiz's actions were nothing less than attempted murder. Due to the seriousness of his crimes, Ortiz received a sentence long enough to ensure he’ll never see freedom again, let alone another operating room.
