For the family and friends of 15-year-old Calvary Baptist student Hayden Lane Mangum, June 1, 2021, is a date they will never forget. It was on that day that Lane and a friend were fishing on Lake Bistineau and he lost his life in a tragic boating accident. Since then, Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell has pushed to have a safety barrier installed at the site of the accident to help mark the spillway and prevent future accidents. Similar safety measures are already in place on Toledo Bend and the Red River.

Losing a child is something that no parent should have to go through, but in Lane's memory, his family has found a way to do something positive in the midst of their loss and has established the Lane Mangum Memorial Scholarship Fund. They are raising money for that fund through a baseball tournament coming up on May 28th and 29th, 2022, over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Thanks to last year's tournament, the Lane Mangum Memorial Scholarship Fund was able to award two $5,000 scholarships to local students earlier this month.

Registration for the tourney is open now through May 25th, 2022, for Tball (6u) - 14U teams at Walbrook Park in Bossier City. In addition to playing ball at the tournament, attendees can take part in drawings for gift cards, raffles, and a silent auction. All of the proceeds from the event will go to the Lane Mangum Memorial Scholarship Fund for 2023 graduates. They also plan to hold a golf tournament later this fall to raise more scholarship funds in Lane's memory.

50+ Pictures of Shreveport's Abandoned Historic Fairgrounds Field

Before you know it, Shreveport's historic Fairgrounds Field will be will be exactly that - history. Once the legal wrangling is done, the proverbial endangered-bat-guano will hit the fan and the once glorious Ratchet-City cathedral to baseball will be demolished and gone.

Before it "bats" its final inning, let's take a final look at the glory that once was. I warn you though, it's kind of like seeing that super-hot girl from high school 20 years later - and time has not been kind.

These awesome pictures were provided by urban photographer extraordinaire Ron DeBello.
