You better let your short friends know, today is their day. Because today, December 21st, is National Short Girl Appreciation Day. The "technical" rules we found say the day celebrates girls under 5'4, but really this should be a day to celebrate any girl who feels "short".

How did we get here? How did December 21st end up being Short Girl Appreciation Day? Well, today is also the Winter Solstice...which means its the shortest day of the year. Now occasionally that date slides to December 22nd, but for the most part, it lands on the 21st.

The Winter Solstice is celebrated in cultures around the world, in various ways. But in the United States, the Winter Solstice is overshadowed by Christmas.

However National Short Girl Appreciation Day might be able to actually breakthrough the holiday blockade created by Christmas. Because short girls are vitally important to our world, and they deserve recognition. Don't believe me? Check out some of the names that come in under 5'4

The girls who may be considered "short" today haven't always been "short" in world history. According to NationalToday.com:

"Tiny doorways in the 1700s proved that while a 5’2” woman today might be considered on the short side, they would have been completely average in a different time! Even average men between the 12th and 16th centuries would be considered short by today’s standards. These days, the average female height is 5’4”. Though buildings, roads, and cities are only getting larger worldwide, short women are keeping up!"

So whoever that short girl is in your life, show them some extra love today. Because it's their day!
