When we found out that Louisiana hunting guru David Moreland was bringing a big buck contest to this year's Sportsman's Expo at the Shreveport Convention Center, we thought it was a perfect fit.

The avid hunter and former employee of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries employee spoke with us about the big outdoor expo, his love of hunting and reminded us why they call Louisiana the Sportsman's Paradise.

Scoring the Kill

Moreland, who is an official measurer for the Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young clubs, will personally be at Sportsman's Expo to take a look at the quarry brought in.

"I'll be officially scoring the deer and if they qualify for those two national record books systems, the hunter who killed it can enter it in the record book," said Moreland.

Big buck divisions

The big buck contest, which you can find an entry form for here, has six categories: Louisiana gun division, ladies division, youth division, out-of-state gun division, bow division and a division for muzzle-loaders and crossbows.

"Anybody can bring a deer head in, the antlers, and it'll be officially scored, and the winners in each division will receive a prize," Moreland explained, adding that "everybody who enters gets their name in the hat for the drawing for the grand prize."

Deer season

Moreland said the past deer hunting season was pretty good, so he expects a good turnout for the contest.

"I know there were some good deer killed up in north Louisiana. We measured some deer down in south Louisiana at several big contests and of course in the Monroe area," Moreland said. "But I'm not sure a lot of the deer heads in northwest Louisiana have really been officially scored, so I'm kind of looking forward that there's going to be some good deer come in that we haven't seen, or maybe didn't know about, weren't reported in the magazine or the papers."

Contest deadline + prizes

The deadline for entering the big buck contest is the end of the show's second day -- Saturday, July 20. The winners will be presented with awards on Sunday afternoon before the close of the show.

Winners for each division will also receive a copy of Moreland's book, "Louisiana Whitetails: Your guide to growing big deer, managing the herd and figuring out where to hunt them."
