Every year, without fail someone tries to deep fry a frozen turkey.

You would think that after countless crazy Thanksgiving horror stories we would all know to never try and cook a turkey that is still frozen. However, we just don't listen too well in the south, do we?

The USDA always reminds us of the proper turkey thawing times. Yes, if your turkey is big enough, you may have to thaw it out as early as a week before Thanksgiving.

It's no secret that we love deep-fried foods in the south, so why would we not go for a deep-fried turkey right?

Every year, there are thousands of house fires that get caused because of deep-frying a turkey.

According to TheAtlantic.com "Each year, fire departments respond to more than 1,000 fires related to deep fryers. Those fires cause serious burn injuries and more than $15 million in property damage." Yes, you read that right, over 1,000 fires are caused due to deep frying.

According to The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) US fire departments responded to about 1,630 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving day back in 2018.

Tech Insider posted a video on YouTube that shows us exactly what happens when you try and deep fry a turkey. Check out the video below.

So what if you did thaw your turkey out in time and you want to make sure that you deep fry that big bird safely?

Kin.com provided us with 8 simple steps we can all take to avoid a catastrophe as we saw in the video above.

1. Head Outside

It's simple turkey fryers belong outside. Fryers can easily tip and spill hot oil everywhere, so head outside far from anything that can catch fire.

2. Don’t Get Distracted

According to the NFPA. most accidents are caused because of us being distracted. Focus on the task or should we say turkey at hand.

3. Don’t Overfill the Pot with Oil

It’s quite simple, if you overfill the pot with oil, it will spill over once you drop the turkey. Remember, you can always add more oil.

4. Thaw Turkey Completely Before Frying

This is one of those non-negotiable situations. If the turkey is not completely thawed out, a catastrophe will happen.

5. Keep an Eye on the Temperature

Don't try to fry without a thermometer. Use a cooking thermometer so the oil doesn’t overheat and cause a fire.

6. Protect Yourself

Protect your hands and arms with long cooking gloves. No one wants a third-degree burn on Thanksgiving.

7. Keep Combustibles Away

Don't let any little thing that can catch fire near your air fryer.

8. Be Prepared

Keep a fire extinguisher nearby just in case there’s a fire. You can never be too sure.
