Louisiana Theaters Could Soon Start Selling Beer

Some Louisiana movie theaters may soon start selling beer. Recent legislation passed by the state Legislature would allow theaters that meet certain requirements to obtain a permit to sell alcoholic beverages.

In order to qualify for this special liquor permit, theaters would have to provide a designated area to conduct booze sales that is separate from concessions that sell popcorn and other traditional theater snacks.

However, lawmakers are worried that permitting alcohol consumption in theaters will expose children to drunken debauchery. Yet, supporters argue that the goal is not to create a bar atmosphere, but rather give moviegoers the option to have a cold one during the show.

The bill must now go before Governor Bobby Jindal for either his signature or a veto. There is no word how the governor will decide.

Some Louisiana theaters already have alcohol permits, but those places prohibit minors from attending.
