Mastodon’s Brent Hinds Goes Old School Country on New West End Motel Song
Mastodon's Brent Hinds is one prolific dude. With Mastodon having released a new full length and an EP this year and the debut album from Giraffe Tongue Orchestra last year, there's been a lot of Hinds to go around. Now, he's just released another dose of new music with West End Motel and you can hear the new country flavored, boot scootin' jam "Sorry I'm Late" in the video above.
The video is about as low budget as they come with candid footage of the group playing in the studio and onstage with plenty of clips of Hinds goofing around. "Hello, thanks for joining us back again. It's been a long time since we've talked, so let's catch up," says the guitarist before "Sorry I'm Late" begins, opening with the some jangling acoustic chords. There's a honky tonk feel with the piano gently plugging away in the background for the full saloon effect and even if you're not a country fan, there's a certain charm that hurdles any apprehensions.
"Sorry I'm Late" is taken off West End Motel's new album, Bad With Names, Good With Faces, which is out today (Dec. 1) and is available through the group's Bandcamp page. It's the third album from the group and first since 2012's Only Time Can Tell.
“Definitely a departure from the rest of the record, here’s ole B Hinds making good on his promise for some home cooked country with Ben Thrower’s official band apology to our wives, girlfriends and really anyone we’ve woken up at 5AM," comments West End Motel. "Think 1977 in the back of your parents crappy wagon furiously trying to get passing truckers to blow their horn. We are southern kids raised on Otis Redding, Merle Haggard and Roger Miller, so we can’t help it, it’s just in us on occasion.”
Hinds also has another project on his hands, Legend of the Seagullmen, which also features Tool drummer Danny Carey, and they'll perform a special New Year's Eve show opening for Primus in Oakland, California. Unfortunately, there's still no word on the debut from Turd Factory, the reactivated collaborative effort between Hinds and his Mastdon bandmate Troy Sanders.
