Memorial Day kicks off summer for most Americans, but you should know this is a day to remember those men and women who have died to protect our country and our freedoms.

Hillcrest Memorial Park

The 40th Annual Memorial Day service at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Haughton gets underway at 9 am Monday, May 29th. Representatives of area veterans and fraternal organizations and active duty, guard and reserve units as well as area junior R-O-T-C’s will lay wreaths. Colonel Tony Zucco who is the ROTC instructor at Haughton High School. If you would like to lay a wreath at this years event, call 965-4124.

MEMORIAL DAY MASS

A Memorial Day mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery on Texas Avenue near Levy Street. Bishop Michael Duca invites all local residents to the Mass which begins at 10am.

DAV CHAPTER 30 TRIBUTE

Disabled American Veterans Tribute at 1pm at the Greenwood Cemetery, Stoner Avenue at Market Street in Shreveport. Disabled American Veterans Chapter 30 of Shreveport-Bossier will pay respects to veterans in the cemetery's DAV section.

VETERANS CEMETERY

The Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetary near Keithville also holds an annual event. It begins at noon and is open to the public.

AMERICAN LEGION EVENT

The traditional close of area activities is the “casting the wreath upon the waters” observance by Fleet Reserve Association Branch 98 at 2 pm at the American Legion Post on South Lake Shore Drive, on the south shore of Cross Lake. The service will also include the tolling of bells and the reading of the names of lost shipmates.
