Though James Hetfield revealed prior to the release of Hardwired ... To Self-Destruct that the band tends to stay away from divisive subjects such as politics in their music, he did state that the members have their own views. And those members have expressed some of those view publicly with Lars Ulrich previously contemplating a move out of the U.S. with Donald Trump's election and now Kirk Hammett feeling a Twitter war is coming with the President Elect after some comments in a new interview.

During a chat with Billboard with the subject turning to the band's charitable contributions, Hammett spoke of his support of the Sierra Club and the Surfrider organization, both dealing with preserving the environment. "I really think that going into these next few years and the global situation, that it’s important for everyone to just start talking to each other and communicating," stated Hammett. "And so Metallica really wants the world to be a better place. We really do. I know that sounds so funny and almost contrary, but this is our part in just doing what we can."

When the subject of Trump's views came up, Hammett added, "I'm just waiting to get into a personal Twitter war with him. I'm just waiting." The interviewer brought up Trump's past statement that climate change was a hoax devised by China, to which Hammett added, "Let’s sit with that statement right there. What does that tell you about the man? What does that tell you? Any normal, educated person who has a pretty good grip on reality -- evenly balanced, could even be a centrist sort of person, not left or not right, any person who I just described -- upon hearing something like that would just think, "What the f--kin’ fairy tale did that come out of?"

He continued, "For me, a good leader is someone with integrity, honesty and altruism, and a general sense of what is right and what’s wrong. We don’t have that in our leadership right now, and that puts me in a state of awareness and attentiveness, and it puts me in a state of wait and see what will happen. But if anything happens that I’m not okay with, I’m going to be super vocal about it for the first time in my life."

Parsing his words carefully, Hammet says, "I -- not Metallica, but I -- will take it upon myself to get involved, if there is something I see that is seriously wrong, and I really feel that it’s my job to say something, and to call out people who need to be called out. I believe in fairness. I believe in equal ground for everyone. I believe in equal opportunity and I believe that everyone is equal. That guy doesn’t even believe in that! He does not believe that everyone is equal."

Metallica's next performance will come this Thursday (Dec. 15) at Hollywood's Fonda Theatre with proceeds from the show going to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. They'll also perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday night (Dec. 14).
