With archery deer season starting tomorrow (Saturday, October 1) hunting is in the air! It's everywhere you go. Even if you go to church with me, you'll find most conversations are about the upcoming season.

This past Tuesday night, First Baptist Church Haughton held our annual Big Buck Banquet. It was completely sold out with nearly 1,300 people in attendance. Deer hunting is just that important around here you know.

The featured speaker was Bud Fisher and his alter ego, "Rut Daniels." Fisher, a professional hunter and co-owner of the "Catchin' Deers" brand of apparel, is also a very devoted Christian.  His message to those in attendance was not only extremely funny, but he conveyed how important a real relationship with Jesus can be.

At one point, he brought up the origin of the Catchin' Deers brand and how it all took place when the "new guy" showed up at the deer camp and immediately after walking in, asked the guys, "Ya'll catching any deers?"

Of course, everyone shook their heads in disbelief that he could be this uneducated. But it's "where" this event took place that got me.  He said it was at the deer camp that his brother had purchased in Kentucky and that his brother had played professional hockey for 18 years.  Some of those years he played for the Nashville Predators.

Immediately, my buddy Justin tapped me on the shoulder and asked, "What's this guy's last name?" I said, Fisher. "And his brother played for the Predators?"  That's when the light went off in my head. He is Mike Fisher's brother.  If you don't recognize the name, Mike Fisher, you probably have heard of his wife; Carrie Underwood.  In fact, Mike is the other co-owner of "Catchin' Deers."

As Bud relayed several of the hunting adventures he's taken over the years, he told one story that I was certain I had heard before. When I told my friend Matt, a huge baseball fan, about the story, he knew exactly where I had heard it before.

He said, Mickey Mantle told that very story about Billy Martin years ago. It all started when Billy began to manage the Texas Rangers and was given a new deer rifle, so he asked Mickey to take him hunting.

I'll let Mickey take it from here.

Oh, and a big thanks to Bud Fisher and "Rut Daniels" for doing an amazing job the other night. If you aren't familiar with Rut's YouTube videos, check this one out and you'll want to watch all the others.
