Mom Leaves Infant Home Alone While She Crossed Street To Go Drinking
An Opelousas mother has been arrested for leaving her three-month-old infant home alone while she spent time drinking at a convenience store across the street.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Spokesperson Major Eddie Thibodeaux said 32-year-old Ashley Deshotels was charged with child endangerment and disturbing the peace by intoxication Tuesday.
According to Thibodeaux, the child's father returned home from church to find the infant sleeping on the adults' bed with no adult supervision.
Deputies arrived at the home to find Deshotels was still across the street and intoxicated in public.
Thibodeaux said the suspect showed no remorse when saying:
"She (the 3 month old infant) was in the bed asleep, so I went across the street to do what I do best.”
Deshotels told police she would go check on the child every 10 to 15 minutes.
“Leaving children especially an infant alone in a home without supervision is not only a crime but of course is very irresponsible and unacceptable. The safety of our children must be our number one priority.” --Sheriff Bobby Guidroz
