What’s the Most Stolen Car on the Road Today?
New data from the Highway Loss Data Institute, which uses auto insurance claims to track the cars most likely to be stolen or broken into, says the most popular car with thieves is the Cadillac Escalade.
It’s the fourth year in a row the luxury SUV has topped the list, with about 10 of every 1,000 Escalades on the road falling victim to criminals. In a statement, Escalade maker GM said a number of theft-deterrent systems, such as sensors and better steering column locks, have been added to newer Escalades to combat the problem.
Overall, pickups and SUVs are popular with thieves because the cars often have expensive tools and electronics inside, which likely explains why three versions of the Ford Super Duty pickup are on the list as well.
Also making an appearance is the Chrysler 300, which Chrysler spokesman Vince Muniga says is frequently targeted because of the pricey accessories and wheels added by owners.
The vehicles with the lowest frequency of theft claims include the Audi A6, the Mercury Mariner, the front-wheel-drive 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and the Volkswagen CC.
