Celebrate Your Fur Babies This Weekend for National Mutt Day
National Mutt Day is Sunday, July 31st, but at my house, I celebrate my mutts every day! In fact, we love our mutts so much, that they get two days each year; July 31st and December 2nd. There's a reason why we call dogs (wo)man's best friend!
I don't know if this is true or not, but I've always heard that mixed-breed dogs are smarter than purebred dogs. Maybe something to do with inbreeding? Either way, our shelters and rescues here in Shreveport-Bossier are chock full of mutts that would love for you to give them a 'furever home!' In fact, the ASPCA says that approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year. Isn't that sad?
According to the founder of National Mutt Day, Celebrity Pet and Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige, 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. Colleen says, 'Mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier, better behaved, they live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of purebred dogs - such as bomb and drug-sniffing, search and rescue and guiding the blind.' I don't know about you, but I think it's a pretty good argument for adopting your next companion animal/pet.
Want to know where to find your new best friend? Check out my featured adoptable pets right here in northwest Louisiana with Bristol's Babies. It's my hope that one day, every pet will have a loving, healthy home and that we won't need shelters or rescues anymore!
Just in case you're wondering, I have three senior mutts in my house and I wouldn't give them up for the world!
