During World War II, the Nazis got closer to American soil than you might think. New video footage indicates a wrecked German U-boat  is sitting just about 45 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to reports, the U.S. Navy sank this German U-166 in 1942, along with its 52-crew members. It was the only U-boat out of the Nazi's 22-vessel fleet that the American military managed to sink. It is now considered a war gravesite.

"For many years, the military believed that the U-boat had escaped and was destroyed the next day in another part of the Gulf by a Coast Guard plane. The error wasn't remedied until the wrecks were discovered only a few miles apart and proper credit was given to PC-566," according to nautiluslive.org.

However, while the sunken Nazi U-boat is not a new discovery, researchers have recently been examining the wreckage to learn more about how the ship was sunk. "Many souls were lost on these wrecks and others, but now they are teeming with corals and undersea creatures," Robert Ballard, who is famous for discovering the Titanic, told the Houston Chronicle. "It's the amazing tapestry of life."
