I ain’t afraid of no ghosts. I am afraid of cover songs.

Ghostbusters is an underrated 1980s soundtrack. “Cleanin’ Up the Town” by the Bus Boys. “Savin’ the Day” by Alessi Brothers. All that great Elmer Bernstein score. And, of course, the classic Ghostbusters theme song by Ray Parker Jr. Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters is now less than a month away, and naturally it’s getting a soundtrack album of its own. I fully endorse the inclusion of “Rhythm of the Night” by DeBarge and DMX’s “Party Up (Up in Here).” There are also ghost and Ghostbusting related songs by Pentatonix, Wolf Alice, and Mark Ronson. And the Parker Jr. theme gets an update of sorts by Fall Out Boy featuring Missy Elliott. The technical title of the track is “Ghostbusters (I’m Not Afraid).” You can hear it above.

And it is ... it is what it is. I am trying, in the face overwhelming negativity, to remain positive about this movie. But this is not great. Why does it sound like a Lenny Kravitz song? Maybe I’m just too old to enjoy this? I am very old. Maybe I don’t get it. The Missy Elliott verse isn’t terrible. They changed “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts” to “I’m not afraid, not afraid.”

Oh well. At least it’s better than the theme song from the Ghost Busters TV show.

Yeah that’s way worse. Ghostbusters opens in theaters on July 15.
