Caddo school leaders are looking at possible options for the Arthur Circle school campus in Shreveport.

The Caddo School Board voted to close Arthur Circle and send those students to the Broadmoor STEM Academy, a Pre-K through 8th grade school.

Board member Christine Tharpe is proposing using the facility as a youth center to offer services to children who are at risk. Tharpe says this proposal is in the early stages and she has just presented the plan to a committee of the Caddo School Board. This complex would remain under the umbrella of the school board but it would be managed by the Volunteers for Youth Justice.

Tharpe says she recently visited truancy court and she was "shocked at the truancy numbers which have skyrocketed in Caddo over the past year." She has continued to research the problem and found several areas where we can offer services to help these young people. The youth center at Arthur Circle would provide services to "ensure the necessary tools are made available, in order to succeed in every aspect of life." This would be a 'One Stop Shop' to let Juvenile Justice System, the Caddo Parish School System and the parents and child to have one location to address the issues affecting the behavior and discipline of students.

Here are some of the activities that would be included at the center:

Computer Lab Summer Camps
Health and Fitness activities and nutrition awareness
Parenting Program After school tutoring program
