Nicolas Cage Really Loved ‘Civil War,’ ‘Batman v. Superman,’ and ‘Suicide Squad’
For an actor whose superhero prospects haven’t always been stellar, Nicolas Cage sure does love superhero movies. His role as Big Daddy in Kick-Ass was the most positively received, but critics and audiences alike were lukewarm-to-cold on his Johnny Blaze in the Ghost Rider movies (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is actually a good movie, okay). Cage isn’t salty about it though, revealing that he really did enjoy this year’s three most recent superhero movies (minus Doctor Strange).
Speaking with Collider about his wild new movie Army of One, Cage said that he thinks the state of superhero movies is right on track.
I thought Civil War was excellent. I though Batman v. Superman was excellent. I though Will Smith was great in Suicide Squad. I think that the genre is in good shape.
It looks like Nicolas Cage, eternal voice of reason — when he’s not totally losing it — holds both Marvel and DC in equal esteem. His comments about Civil War jive with the critic consensus, but it’s interesting that he also enjoyed the other two, which were pretty poorly received. But on the other hand, he’s the kind of actor who gives everything to any role, no matter how terrible the movie is, so he probably found a kindred spirit in Will Smith, whose Deadshot, along with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, made Suicide Squad worth watching.
Would we be surprised if Nic Cage had odd taste in movies? Probably not. His own filmography is an eclectic mix of successes, failures, and everything in between. But one thing is for sure: he’s not stopping anytime soon.
