A "carbon capture" green energy venture may result in a $550 million investment in Shreveport. This project could lead to 465 new jobs between direct and indirect jobs.

The company at the center of this proposal is called Bia Energy Operating Company, and their concept for this project centers around blue methanol production. The plant would be constructed at the Port of Caddo-Bossier in Shreveport.

According to a statement from the Louisiana Economic Development corporation, this proposed plant would be able to produce 530,000 metric tons of methanol annually, using natural gas as a feedstock. The proposed plant would feature carbon capture capabilities, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by more than 90 percent compared to traditional methanol plants.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards shared his support for the project, saying in a statement:

“Louisiana welcomes and supports Bia Energy’s plans for investment, job creation and increased economic activity in Northwest Louisiana. BEOC’s proposed use of carbon capture technology is important, as we continue a trend of industrial growth in Louisiana that aligns with our commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. We look forward to seeing this project progress and become operational in the near term.”

The plans include 75 direct jobs that would pay an annual salary of $80,000 (averaged) plus benefits. If the construction begins, the proposed plant would take up a nearly 75 acre lot at the Port. Estimates suggest that at peak construction there would be 350 construction jobs.

Reports say the company plans to decide on whether or not to build in Shreveport during the first quarter of 2022.
