John Kay, Director for the Louisiana Chapter of Americans for Prosperity, talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about a proposed compromise to raise funds to cover the state's billion dollar budget shortfall.

Kay Tells KEEL listeners that a letter sent to Governor John Bel Edwards by fourteen state senators, including area legislators John Milkovich and Greg Tarver, aims to "compress tax brackets":

Part of the letter states:

"Compressing In come Tax Brackets: 6% effective rate at $30,000 single / $60,000 joint, Reducing Excess Itemized Deduction to 50%, and impact of federal tax reform: $602 million."

Kay says that the current effective rate for people in that specific income bracket is 4%, and an increase to the proposed 6% is a 50% increase.

The senators proposal also calls for "sales tax base expansion" to specific industries. The fourteen signees say their proposals would raise $1.075 billion in additional revenue for the state.
