Serj Tankian, Tom Morello + More Release Cover of ‘Crazy Train’ From Randy Rhoads Tribute Album
We've been reading all about the upcoming 'Immortal' Randy Rhoads tribute album, which is packed full of rock and metal's most accomplished musicians. Now, a cover of 'Crazy Train' by Serj Tankian, Tom Morello, Rudy Sarzo and Vinny Appice has been revealed by Rolling Stone.
With musicians from Black Sabbath, System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine and Dio on board, you know the 'Crazy Train' cover will find its own identity. Serj Tankian attacks Ozzy Osbourne's vocal part with his high-pitched bellowing, while Tom Morello keep's the song's various leads more controlled compared to Rhoads' wild and freeform style.
You'll hear little changes throughout 'Crazy Train,' with Appice even switching between beats never featured on the original recording. The most obvious re-imagining is found in place of Rhoads' iconic bridge. Instead of using Rhoads' sense of reckless abandon, Morello turns the 'Crazy Train' solo into an experimental variance you'd expect to hear on a Rage album.
The all-star cover doesn't quite pack a punch like the Ozzy / Rhoads opus, leading to some harsh criticism from fans on Rolling Stone's Facebook page. Fan reaction so far has been very mixed, but don't take anyone else's word for it. Check out the 'Crazy Train' cover in the player below.
'Immortal Randy Rhoads: The Ultimate Tribute' will be released March 3 via UDR Music.
