How Important is Mardi Gras to Shreveport?

The Mardi Gras parades in Shreveport are about 90 days from now and we are still trying to figure out the plan for the two biggest krewes.

Mayor Adrian Perkins is trying to reach a new agreement with the Krewes of Centaur and Gemini about the plan for the 2022 parades.

Stacy Brown is President of the Shreveport Bossier Convention and Visitor's Bureau. She talks to KEEL News about the financial impact to the entire region.

Brown says the Mardi Gras parades have a $20 million dollar overall economic impact on Shreveport and Bossier City. The direct tax dollars collected for Shreveport top the $700,000 dollar mark while Bossier gets more than $200,000 in direct tax dollars as a result of the parades.

Brown also says the parades put our community in the national spotlight. She says the parades rival the Independence Bowl in terms of the number of people who find out about our region from attending or seeing coverage of the parades. Many of them later come back to visit something they saw or heard about while attending the Mardi Gras parades.
