More than 30 mayors from across the country are asking President Joe Biden to move forward quickly with a plan to send recurring checks to Americans until this pandemic is over.

Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins joins 33 other mayors in supporting the plan. Perkins says the US economy already didn’t work for half of all Americans and the pandemic has just exacerbated that, and this is a way to help folks out while stimulating the economy.

The group of mayors bought a full-page ad in the Washington Post showing support for the plan. The heading on the ad says "One more check is not enough."

They have not indicated how much each American should get, but Perkins says there are several bills in Congress right now that have his interest.

Part of the Biden Administration’s 1.9 trillion dollar COVID relief proposal includes one round of 1,400 dollar stimulus checks, but no calls for further checks after that. Perkins adds that these checks could continue as "a guaranteed income". He says adopting these checks now will give us valuable data.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is among the mayors calling for the guaranteed income.  Click here to see the list of mayors.
