Shreveport Officer Accused of Killing Suspect Resigns

A Shreveport police officer involved in a fatal shooting at the Villa Norte apartments last month has stepped down. Officer Alexander Tyler shot and killed 43-year-old Alonzo Bagley on Friday, February 3rd. At that time he was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation by Louisiana State Police.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux issued this statement Friday afternoon:

Today, the Mayor and Police Chief Wayne Smith were notified that Officer Alexander Tyler has resigned from the Shreveport Police Department. This decision was solely made by Mr. Tyler and his attorney. The City has followed all policies and procedures during this process.

On February 16, 23-year-old Tyler was arrested on a charge of negligent homicide in connection to the shooting death of Bagley. Initial reports indicate Bagley, who was not armed, was running from police who were called to the apartment on a domestic violence complaint.

Upon rounding a corner of the building, Officer Tyler observed Mr. Bagley and fired one shot from his service weapon, which struck Mr. Bagley in the chest.

 

In the video, Bagley can be heard saying, “Oh God, you shot me."

On the video you can hear Bagley say "Oh God, you shot me." The officers immediately stepped in to render aid.

The Bagley family has filed a $10 million lawsuit against Tyler. Tyler is due in court on April 3 for arraignment.
