Shreveport Police are investigating a shooting involving an on duty police officer in west Shreveport.

Just before 11pm on Saturday night officers were called to 80th Street at Dillman in Cedar Grove where some people were walking down the street firing shots.

An officer spotted two men in the street who matched the description called in. The men separated in what investigators believe was an ambush attempt on the officer.

37-year-old Rodriques Smith reportedly pulled a gun and pointed it at the officer as the officer got out of his patrol car. The officer fired shots at the man, striking him at least once. The second suspect, 34-year-old Ladarren Jackson, engaged the officer, reportedly pointing his weapon as well. The officer fired at Jackson striking him at least once. Jackson fled the scene on foot. Smith was transported to University Health Hospital with what was described as life-threatening injuries. Jackson was located at ahome on 83rd Street. He was suffering from at least one gunshot injury and was transported to University Health Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Both weapons used against the officer were located and seized.

Both suspects are still in the hospital. They each face charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a gun by a convicted felon and illegal use of a weapon.

The officer was placed on paid department leave per departmental policy.
